Skill Level: Advanced

Create a futuristic illustration with geometric shapes and astral textures.

The Final Outcome

The model we’ll be using for this tutorial is from a stock photo that can be downloaded here.

With the photo open in Photoshop, use the Pen Tool to draw a clean outline of the model’s body, then a fairly rough outline around the hair.

Use the Refine Edge tools to further refine the selection around the hair, then output the selection to a layer mask.

With the layer mask selected, clean up the selection alternating between small black and white brushes.

For more information on making selections, see this article.

Or you can download the precut model here.

Open a new 1800 x 2500 document, and drop in your model, then desaturate it (Image > Adjustments > Desaturate).

Below the model layer add a Color Fill adjustment using the colour #666a76.

Duplicate the Color Fill layer and move it above the model layer. Right click on the layer and choose Create Clipping Mask, then set the layer’s blending mode to Soft Light.

Add a Curves Layer with a clipping mask, and use the black colour picker and white colour picker buttons to pinpoint a corresponding black or white area of the model, therefore boosting the contrast.

Open a new document 1px x 4 px.

Make a rectangular selection over the top two pixels and go to Edit > Fill, then select Black.

Go to Edit > Define Brush Preset, and give the pattern a name.

Back in your main document, make a new layer above all the others and go to Edit > Fill, then select your pattern from the Custom Pattern list.

Give the layer a clipping mask, then set the layer’s blending mode to Overlay and set the opacity to 20%.

Create a new 5px x 50px document, and fill the top 15 pixels with black.

Save the image as a pattern like before.

Add a new layer in you main document, and fill it with your new pattern.

Using the Move Tool, scale down the pattern and rotate it 45 degrees.

Position it so that it covers the bottom of the model. You can hide the layer when you’re done.

Select the model layer, and apply a layer Mask.

With the layer mask selected go to Image > Apply Image, and choose the diagonal lines layer from the Layer list.

Now take the Gradient Tool and using a black to transparent gradient, draw a gradient from the base of the model to the top of the diagonal lines layer.

You can download the space stock here.

Drop the photo into your document, and move it below the model layer.

Give the space layer a layer mask, then use the Gradient Tool to draw a radial gradient over the centre of the model.

Take the Ellipse Tool, hold down the shift key and draw a circle around the models head.

Double-click on the layer thumbnail and set it’s colour to #373944.

Now draw a much larger circle over the model, then double click on the layer to bring up the Layer Styles box.

In the main blending options set the Fill Opacity to 0%, then in the Stroke settings set the size to 10px and the colour to white.

Add a Gradient adjustment layer and use a white to transparent gradient with the Style set to Radial, and the Scale set to 80%.

You can download the wireframe texture pack here.

Drop the texture into your document above the gradient layer.

Rasterize the layer, Invert it, then set the layer’s blending mode to Screen.

Add a new layer and draw a radial gradient using the colour #feb02b from the centre of the model to the white circle.

Set the layer’s blending mode to Lighten, and it’s opacity to 50%.

Now add a new layer above all the other layers.

Draw a radial gradient over the model’s left shoulder using the colour #fd2a9a.

Set the layer’s blending mode to Lighten.

Take the Line Tool and draw a 45 degree (hold down shift) white 1px line as shown below.

Duplicate the line layer and move it downwards.

Duplicate the space layer twice, and move the layers above all the others.

Set both layer’s blending modes to Screen.

Use a radial black to transparent gradient to draw a small gradient in the top layer mask and a larger one in the bottom layer mask.

Finally add a Selective Color adjustment layer and adjust the sliders in the Whites as shown below.

The Final Outcome

Skill Level: Intermediate

Learn how to add cinematic drama to your photos by simulating lens blur, and adding photo filters, and sharpening detail.

The Final Outcome

The stock photo I’ve used for this tutorial was provided by deviantART member Sunshine114, and can be downloaded for free here.

Take the Quick Selection Tool and draw over the sky and buildings in the background.

You can use the ‘[' and ']‘ keys to change the size of the brush, and hold down the alt key to subtract from the selection.

When you’ve made the best selection you can, go to Select > Refine Edge.

Use the Refine Radius Tool to draw over the edge of the hair, improving the edge.

When you’re finished make sure the output is set to New Layer with Layer Mask, and click OK.

With your new layer selected, go to Filter > Blur > Lens Blur.

Use the same settings as I have in the image above, making sure the Source for the Depth Map is set to Layer Mask.

Click OK, and then wait for the Lens Blur filter to render.

When it’s done, duplicate the layer, and select it’s layer mask.

Go to Image > Adjustments > Invert.

Call the layer ‘high pass’, and with the layer thumbnail selected, go to Filter > Other > High Pass.

Set the Radius to 2.5px.

Set the layer’s blending mode to Overlay, then duplicate the layer a couple of times to strengthen the effect.

Click on the Adjustment Layer button at the bottom of the layers panel, and choose Hue/Saturation.

Set the Saturation to -75.

Next add a Color adjustment layer using the colour #00fff6.

Take the layer opacity down to 5%, and set it’s blending mode to Lighten.

Add a Photo Filter layer using the colour #ec8a00 with the Density set to 10%.

Add an Exposure adjustment layer and subtly tweak the sliders to strengthen the shadows and highlights as I have n the image above.

Finally add a gradient adjustment layer using a black to transparent Radial gradient with the Scale set to 150%.

Set the layer’s blending mode to Soft Light.

Duplicate the layer, and set the duplicates opacity to 50%.

The Final Outcome

Skill Level: Beginner

Learn how to give your photos a warm, pink and yummy flavour, great for cakes and confectionary.

The Final Outcome

The Photo

Well lit photos with pinks and whites will work great with this effect.

The stock photo I’ve used for this tutorial can be downloaded here.

1.

First, with the photo open in Photoshop, click on the adjustment layer button at the bottom of the layer panel and choose Curves.

2.

We’ll now adjust the contrast of the photo using only the color picker options.

Click on the black colour picker button in the Curves box, then find a dark spot in the photo and click on it to establish it as the darkest point of the photo.

Then similarly take the white color picker and use it to choose the lightest part of the photo.

3.

Next, add a Selective Color adjustment layer, and in the Colors dropdown box choose Whites.

Move the Yellow slider up to +25, giving the white part of the photo a yellow tint.

4.

Now choose Neutrals, and take the Magenta slider to +20.

5.

Finally choose Blacks, and take the Yellow slider to -30, and the Black slider to -5.

6.

Lastly we will lighten the top of the image with a couple of Gradients.

Make sure you your foreground colour set to white in your colour palette, then add a Gradient adjustment layer.

The gradient should be set to white to transparent as default, if not you will have to change it manually.

Set it to Linear with the angle at -90, and the scale at 100%.

7.

Set the gradient layer’s blending mode to Soft Light.

8.

Duplicate the gradient layer, and take the duplicate’s layers opacity down to 50%.

The Final Outcome

Here’s how the final effect should look.

Below are some more examples of photos with exactly the same process applied.

Skill Level: Advanced

In this tutorial you’ll learn how to transform a girl into a demon

You’ll learn how to to remove hair, darken and lighten skin, and blacken eyes all in Photoshop.

Step 1: Removing the hair

The model stock photo we will use as a base for this tutorial can be downloaded here.

Use the Pen Tool to draw around the edge of the model.

Ignore the shape of the hair, and just round off the top of the head in line with where the scalp would be.

When you’re done, use the Direct Selection Tool to right click, and choose Make Selection.

Invert the selection, and delete the background.

Next make a selection across the forehead using the Polygonal Lasso Tool.

Copy and paste the selection into a new layer with a clipping mask, then use the transform tool to stretch the area over the top of the head.

Use an additional selection of skin to cover the areas around the ears, so all of the hair is completely covered.

Using layer masks and a soft black brush, mask out the hard edges of the skin layers, blending them into the original layer.

use the Polygonal Lasso Tool to make a selection around the left ear, copy and paste it into a new layer. Then use the Move Tool enlarge and rotate it a little, and move it inwards to hide the hair that overlaps the ear.

Back in the model layer, use a layer mask, and a black brush to mask out the original ear.

Once you’ve done the same for the right ear, make a new layer and set it’s blending mode to Lighten.

Use the colour picker to find a suitable skin colour, then take a soft brush set to Lighten at 20% opacity and paint over any areas of shadow or unnatural colours.

Step 2: Removing the eyebrows

Back in the model layer, use the Lasso Tool to make a selection over the left eyebrow, the go to Edit > Fill, and choose Content Aware.

You may need make aditional selections over parts that the content aware fill didn’t quite remove.

Once you have erased both eyebrows as best as you can, return to the skin layer that you’ve just used for the ears.

Using a soft brush with a colour similar to the area around the eyebrows, paint a few times over each eyebrow to even out the skin colour.

Step 3: Blackening the eyes

You can now group all the layers together, then make a new layer called ‘left eye’.

Use the Pen Tool to draw around the left eye, turn it into a selection and fill it with white.

Double click on the layer to bring up the Layer Styles box.

Choose Outer Glow, set it to Linear Light at 30%, use black and set the Size to 25 pixels.

Choose Inner Glow, set to Normal, black, and set the Size to 90.

And finally choose Color Overlay and set the colour to a very dark grey (#303030).

Click OK.

Repeat exactly the same process for the right eye in a new layer.

Next we’ll create two new layers for the shine on each eye.

First, with the ‘right eye’ layer selected, cmd or crtl click on the layer thumbnail to make a selection of the eye.

Back in the ‘model’ layer, copy and then paste the selection into a new layer called ‘right eye shine’.

Go to Image > Adjustments > Levels.

Use the sliders to darken the eye as much as possible without losing the shiny areas.

Now, with a small black brush, paint over the whites of the eye, leaving only the eye shine visible.

Finally, change the layer’s blending mode to Screen.

Repeat exactly the same process to add the shine to the left eye.

Now save the file to your desktop as a PSD, and close it.

Step 4: Creating the background

We’ll now move into a new document where we’ll create the background, and add the final touches.

Create a new 1900 x 3000 px document.

Click on the Adjustment Layer button at the bottom of the layers panel, and choose Gradient.

Use a black to white Radial gradient.

Take the Gradient layer’s Opacity down to 20%.

Drag your PSD into your new document, and position it at the bottom of the image.

Step 5: Bleaching the skin

Add a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer, and right click on it choosing Create Clipping Mask.

Take the saturation down to -80.

Add a Levels adjustment layer, and adjust the sliders as I have above to lighten the skin.

Now in the Levels 1 layer mask, take a large soft black brush, and mask out the area from the base of the nose downwards.

Step 6: Darkening the skin

Add another Levels layer with a clipping mask, and with its layer mask selected, go to Image > Apply Image…

In the Layer field choose Levels 1, for the Channel select Layer Mask, and tick the Invert box.

Click OK.

The adjustments we make to the Levels layer will now only affect the lower part of the image.

Now adjust the sliders as I have above to darken the skin.

Add a Hue/Saturation adjustment Layer with a clipping mask, and take the saturation down to -100.

Apply the inverted layer mask like you did for the Levels 2 layer.

Finally, back in the Levels 2 layer mask, take a small soft white brush with the Opacity set to 10%, and paint over the lips a few times to gradually darken them.

Step 7: Adding the eye shadow

Add a new layer above all the others, and call it ‘left eye’.

With the Pen Tool, click to add a point in the corner of the left eye closest to the nose, the drag up and across then release. Add another point a little above the eye, drag in the direction of the curve and release.

Repeat this copying the shape in my example above, and when you get to the side of the head, alt click on that point to stop the next point from making a curve, then continue as normal until you meet up with the first point again.

You can use the Direct Selection Tool to alter the points if you need to.

When you’re finished, right click with the Direct Selection Tool and choose Fill Path, then select Black, to fill the shape with black.

Go to Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur, and set the Radius to 25px.

Now you can right click with the Direct Selection Tool and choose Delete Path.

Duplicate the layer then go to Edit > Transform > Flip Horizontal.

Position the duplicated layer over the right eye with the Move Tool.

For each eye take the Eraser Tool and erase the shadow where it overlaps the eye.

Finally duplicate the shadow layer for each eye, so you have two shadow layers for each eye.

For the top right eye layer, set the blending mode to Overlay, and for the bottom one set the blending mode to Normal, and take the Opacity down to 30%.

Do the same for the left eye shadow layers.

Step 8: Adding the horns

To add the horns we’ll be using a stock photo that can be downloaded here.

With the photo open in Photoshop, use the Quick Selection Tool to make a selection over each of the horns, and copy/paste them into your project.

Resize and position them as I have above.

Merge both antler layers together, then duplicate the layer.

With the duplicated layer selected, go to Edit > Transform > Flip Vertical, then use the Move Tool to line up the base of the antlers with the ones below.

Go to Image > Adjustments > Threshold and take the slider all the way to the right to blacken the antlers.

Move the ‘antlers shadow’ layer below the ‘antlers’ layer, then apply a Gaussian Blur set to 50px.

Move the antlers shadow layer down below all the eye shadow layers, and give it a clipping mask.

Duplicate the layer and give the copy a clipping mask as well.

Set the lower shadow layer’s blending mode to Overlay, and set the top one to Normal at 50% opacity.

In the copy layer, use an eraser to erase the shadow from the ears and lower down the face, leaving the shadow only in the immediate area of the base of the antlers.

Finally in a new layer above the antler shadow layers, take a large soft black brush, then paint carefully around the edge of the base of the antlers to create a small shadow.

Set the layer’s blending mode to Overlay, then duplicate it and set the copy’s blending mode to Normal at 50% opacity.

The Final Outcome

Skill Level: Intermediate

In this tutorial I’ll be showing you how to create a holograph effect straight out of a science fiction movie.

For the background we will use a very cool stock photo courtesy of Tebh-stock, that can be downloaded here.

First of all we want to brighten the image a little, so with the photo open in Photoshop, go to Image > Adjustments > Curves.

In the dialog box, click on the white colour picker button then tap on the area that you want to become the whitest point in the image.

Click OK.

Now go to Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur, and set the Radius to 6 pixels.

Click OK.

Finally, click on the adjustment layer button at the bottom of the layers panel, and choose Photo Filter.

Set the Color to #001eff with the Density at 25%, then set the layer’s blending mode to Lighten.

The model or our holograph is a fabulous Princess Leia courtesy of jagged-eye, which can be downloaded here.

Once downloaded, open the image in Photoshop.

Use the Quick Selection Tool to draw a selection over the model, then use the Refine Edge sliders to tidy up the selection.

More info on making selections can be found here.

Copy and paste the selection into your background, resize, and position it as I have below.

Duplicate the model layer twice, so you have three layers. Call the bottom one ‘glow’, the middle one ‘blur’, and the top layer ‘hologram’.

You can hide the top two layers for now, and double click on the glow layer to bring up the Layer Styles dialog box.

In the Blending Options take the Fill Opacity down to 0%.

Next click on Outer Glow, set the Opacity to 30%, the color to #001eff, and the size to 50%.

Click on Outer Glow and set the Opacity to 30%, the color to #001eff, and the size to 250%.

Click OK.

Now unhide the blur layer, and give it a Gaussian Blur set to 10 pixels.

Set the blur layer’s blending mode to Soft Light.

Next we’ll create a pattern to use for the hologram texture.

Open a new 1px x 10px document, and use the Rectanglar Marquee Tool to make a selection over the top half of the image.

Create a new layer, go to Edit > Fill, and fill it with black.

Delete the bottom Background layer, then go to Edit > Define Pattern, and give your pattern a name.

Now back in your project, set the hologram layer’s blending mode to Color Burn, and set the Opacity to 30%.

Give the hologram layer a layer mask, and with the layer mask thumbnail selected, go to Edit > Fill…

Choose your new pattern from the Contents list, then click OK to apply the pattern to the layer mask.

Duplicate the hologram layer, and set the duplicate’s blending mode to Overlay at 100% Opacity.

Finally click on it’s layer mask thumbnail and go to Image > Adjustments > Invert.

And here’s how your authentic holographic lady will end up looking.

In this tutorial you’ll learn how to create your own iPhone 4 wallpaper, while learning the basics of layer styles, adjustment layers, and filters.

You’ll create stylized space art, utilizing NASA stock, and putting an emphasis on attractive lighting and colour composition.

First open a new Photoshop document, 640 x 960 pixels, and set the resolution to 326 ppi.

This ensures your final image will match the correct resolution and size dimensions of the iPhone 4′s retina display.

We’ll begin by adding the backdrop. The image is from NASA’s online image library, and can be downloaded here.

Once downloaded, drop the image into your photoshop document, and resize and position it as above.

Next we’ll improve the contrast by adding a Curves adjustment layer.

Click on the adjustment layer button at the bottom of the layers panel, and choose Curves.

In the curves dialog box, choose the white colour picker, and click on a bright part of the image like a star.

Then choose the black colour picker, and click on a dark area of the image.

Next we’ll add the moon, which can be downloaded here.

Open the moon with Photoshop, use the elliptical marquee tool to make a circular selection over the moon, then copy and paste it into your project.

Scale down the moon slightly, and move it into the desired position.

Improve the contrast with another Curves adjustment layer, and this time right click on the layer and choose ‘create clipping mask‘ so that the adjustments only affect the moon layer.

Double click on the moon layer to bring up the Layer Styles dialog box.

Click on Outer Glow and set the Blend Mode to Normal, the Opacity to 85%, a white to transparent gradient, the Spread set to 5%, and Size 150px.

Click Inner Glow, set the Blending Mode to Normal, the Opacity to 90%, and Size to 80px.

Add a new layer above the moon layer, go to Edit > Fill, and fill, and choose to fill the layer with Black.

Next go to Filter > Render > Lens Flare, and move the position of the lens flare so that it will line up with with the upper right edge of the moon.

Set the Brightness to 150%.

Now set the lens flare layer’s blending mode to Screen.

You can download the pre-cut asteroid stock from here.

Place it directly into your project, and rotate and resize it so the asteroids drift diagonally across the moon, overlapping the lens flare slightly.

Add a new layer above the asteroid layer, then take the Gradient tool set to Radial and white to tranparent.

Drag out a small gradient from the center of the lens flare outwards.

The last objects we’ll add are the stars.

Use the Ellipse shape tool set to white, and draw a small, thin oval shape.

Now go to Filter > Blur > Motion Blur, and set the Distance to 100 pixels.

Duplicate the layer, and rotate the shape 90 degrees. Then select both layers, right click, and choose Merge layers.

You can now duplicate the star a couple of times to add more stars to your image.

Finally we’ll adjust the overall colour of the image.

Add a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer, and take the saturation all the way down, desaturating the whole image.

Next add a Selective Color adjustment layer, and choose Whites from the Colors dropdown menu.

Move the sliders to the positions shown above.

Then adjust the Neutrals sliders to the settings shown above.

And finally move the Blacks sliders to the positions shown above.

Here’s how the final image should end up looking.

You can now use the image as a background for you iPhone 4.

In this tutorial you'll learn how to add realistic mist to a photo, creating a moody atmosphere.

Skill Level: Intermediate

In this tutorial you’ll learn how to add realistic mist to a photo, creating a moody atmosphere.

You’ll work with simple filters, and learn how to utilize layer masks to control their visibily.

The stock photo I used for this tutorial can be downloaded for free here.

First we will desaturate the image.

With the photo open in Photoshop, click on the Adjustment Layer button at the bottom of the layers panel, and choose Black and White.

You can scroll down the filter options to find a preset that suits your photo, I chose the Green Filter for mine.

Next duplicate the Background layer, and call it ‘blur’.

Go to Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur, and find a suitable amount of blur for your photo so it looks like the image above.

Once you’re finished, hide the blurred layer, we’ll come back to it later.

Add a new layer and go to Filter > Render > Clouds, then set the layer’s blending mode to Screen.

Add three or more layers, filled with clouds to build up a thick blanket of mist.

When you’re done, select all the cloud layers, right click on them and choose ‘Merge Layers’.

Then add a layer mask, by clicking on the Layer Mask button at the bottom of the layers panel.

We’ll now work on thinning out the mist in the foreground of the photo.

With the layer mask thumbnail selected, take a very large soft black brush, and paint out the closest objects in the foreground.

Now reduce the size of the brush, and take the Opacity down to around 10%, and gradually paint away the mist on objects further away.

When your happy with the thickness of the mist over your image, duplicate the layer.

Right click on the duplicated layer’s layer mask, and choose ‘Apply Layer Mask’.

Invert the layer, by going to ‘Image > Adjustments > Invert, then hide the layer.

Now go back to your ‘blur’ layer. Unhide it, and give it a layer mask.

With the layer mask selected, go to Image > Apply Image, and chose the inverted mist layer that you hid earlier, as the Source Layer.

Now invert the layer mask.

You’ll see the blur is now stronger where the mist is thickest.

Here’s how the final image looks with the mist applied.

Skill Level: Beginner

In this tutorial I’ll show you how to combine two separate images to create an elegant photo overlay, using some very quick and easy steps in Photoshop.

The first photo I used for this tutorial can be downloaded here.

First of all we want to convert the image to black and white.

With the photo open in Photoshop, go to Image > Adjustments > Desaturate.

Next click on the adjustment layer button at the bottom of the layers panel, and choose Brightness/Contrast.

Balance out the sliders to give the contrast a boost while increasing the brightness.

Now you’re ready to drop in your second image by dragging the photo into your Photoshop document.

The image I’ve used can be downloaded here.

Desaturate the second image, then resize it using the Transform Tool, so it fits over the desired area of the first image.

When you’re finished, right click on the layer and choose Rasterize Layer.

By rasterizing the layer you can now apply further adjustments to the second image.

Add another Brightness/Contrast adjustment layer, then right click on the layer and choose Create Clipping Mask.

Now the adjustments you make will only apply to the clipped layer.

Increase the brightness and contrast as I have above.

Now click back on the second image’s layer and change it’s blending mode to Screen.

Finally select on the Crop tool and drag over the area that you want to make your final image, and then hit Enter.

And here’s the final outcome.

Please leave a comment and use the share buttons below.

Thanks for reading :)

Learn how to give skin a golden shimmer by mastering adjustment layers, filters and layer masks.

In this intermediate tutorial you’ll learn how to give skin a golden shimmer by mastering adjustment layers, filters and layer masks.

The stock photo I used for this tutorial can be downloaded for free here.

First of all we want to brighten the image, so add an Exposure adjustment layer and balance the sliders so you get strong highlights and shadows.

Next we need to make a selection of the model’s skin.

To do this, first use the Quick Selection Tool to draw over areas of skin on the face and body.

You can hold down the alt key to switch between selecting and deselecting, and reduce the brush size when selecting smaller areas like the eyes and teeth.

When you’ve made the best selection you can, click on Refine Edge and use the Refine Radius Tool with a large brush size to paint over stray hairs, adding them to the selection.

When you’re done, set the Output as a New Layer with Layer Mask, and click OK.

Rename your new skin layer ‘surface blur‘, then go to Filter > Blur > Surface Blur, and set the Radius to 15 pixels, and the Threshold to 10 levels.

This will smooth the skin, while keeping edges sharp.

Next duplicate the background layer twice, and move them above the ‘surface blur’ layer, but below the Exposure layer.

Name the bottom one ‘High Pass 1′, and the top one ‘High Pass 2′, and give them both layer masks.

Click on the layer mask thumbnail of ‘High Pass 1′, and go to Image > Apply Image.

Choose the ‘surface blur’ layer, and it’s layer mask from the drop down menus.

Now add the same layer mask to the ‘High Pass 2′ layer mask, using the same process.

You can now hide the ‘High Pass 2′ layer, and select the ‘High pass 1′ layer thumbnail.

Go to Filter > Other > High Pass, and set the Radius to 30 pixels.

Now set the layer’s blending mode to Overlay, at 30% Opacity.

Unhide the ‘High Pass 2′ layer give it a High Pass set to 2 pixels.

Again, set it’s blending mode to Overlay, and set it’s Opacity to 50%.

Doing this will have given a glow to the skin highlights, and smaller details.

Now add a Selective Color adjustment layer above the Exposure layer.

Choose Blacks from the Colors menu, and adjust the sliders as I’ve done above.

Then choose Neutrals and adjust the sliders so they match mine above.

And finally, choose Whites from the menu, and change the sliders so they match mine.

Select the layer’s layer mask and add the same skin mask as you did for the High Pass layers.

Now add a Solid Color adjustment layer, and choose a tan colour.

Add the same skin layer mask as before.

Set the layer’s blending mode to Hue, and set it’s Opacity to 60%.

Next add a Hue/Saturation layer and take the Saturation down to -20.

Add the skin layer mask to confine the adjustment to the skin areas.

And finally, add another Exposure layer, and balance the sliders as I have above to give the skin an added glow.

And here’s the final outcome.

Learn how to turn a set of eyes completely black while retaining their shine in this easy Photoshop tutorial.

The eyes need to have some shine or reflections on their surface to get the most out of this technique.

The stock photo I’ve used for this tutorial can be downloaded for free here.

We’ll start with the right eye.

To begin with, we need to make a selection of the eye, and the best technique for this is to use the Pen Tool.

With the Pen Tool selected click and drag in the direction of the edge of the eye, then release. Repeat the click, drag, release method until you meet up with the start of the path.

You can use the Direct Selection Tool to adjust the points and curves.

When you’re finished, use the Direct Selection Tool to right click on the path, and choose Make Selection, to transform your path in to a selection.

Add a new layer, and call it right eye, then with the new layer selected go to Edit > Fill, and fill the selection with White.

Next double click on the layer to bring up the Layer Styles dialog box.

Click on Color Overlay and choose a dark grey colour.

Next select Inner Glow and set the Blend mode to Normal, and the Opacity to 100%. The glow should be black, the Choke at 7%, and the Size at 110 px.

Now choose Outer Glow, and set the Blend Mode to Linear Light at 50% Opacity. The colour should be set to black, and the Size set to 16 px.

That’s all the styles we’ll need, so click OK.

For the left eye you just need to repeat all the steps you used to create the right eye.

When you’ve done both eyes, hide their layers and return to the Background layer.

In the Channels menu click on the Green channel, or the channel where the skin appears darkest, and the eye shimmers are brightest.

Copy the layer and select it.

Go to Image > Adjustments > Brightness/Contrast, and balance out the sliders so that the rest of the face is as dark as possible, but the eye glimmers remain white.

Now take a black paintbrush and fill in the rest of the face so that the whole image is black, leaving only the eye shines visible.

When you are finished, hold down the cmd or ctrl key and click on the black layer’s thumbnail, doing this will turn the eye shimmers into a selection.

Now hide the layer, and click back on the RGB layer.

Back in the Layers menu, select the Background layer and copy (cmd/ctrl+c) the selection, then add a new layer called eye shine, and paste the selection into the new layer.

Double click on the eye shine layer, and choose Outer Glow in the Layer Styles dialog box. Set the Blend Mode to Normal, and the Opacity to 100%. The colour should be White, and the Size set to 1 px.

We’re now finished with the eyes, so next we will add some adjustment layers to finish off the image.

Adjustment layers can be added by clicking on the button at the bottom of the layers panel, then choosing the desired layer from the list.

First add an Exposure adjustment layer above the background layer. Adjust the sliders, or use the colour pickers to determine the lightest and darkest points.

Next add a Hue/Saturation layer, and take the Saturation down to -50.

And finally add a Black & White adjustment layer above all the other layers, and choose the High Contrast Blue preset. Set the layer’s blending mode to Overlay, and it’s Opacity to 50%.

Here’s the final outcome.
